Flat Feet Assessment & Orthotics in Bathurst and Lithgow
What are Flat Feet?
Flat feet are commonly attributed to the excessive rolling-in of the arches of the feet while standing. This also changes how an individual lays their feet and shifts their gait when they walk or run.
Normally, the arches collapse into the heel to support the weight of the body and to evenly distribute the stress. This is called pronation. However, in some cases there is excessive pronation, where the arches roll-in further to compensate and offer better balance.
The reasons for this compensation can vary; a few are:
- Hypermobility
- Hereditary bone conditions
- Soft tissue conditions
- Stretched or weak muscles
- Muscle spasticity
- Poor pelvic alignment
- Scoliosis
What to Look Out for
In children, a little bit of pronation of the arches is normal; however, if observing from the rear heel shows signs of excessive rolling-in or if you can see two or three little toes, it is best to get it checked by your doctor or a podiatrist. Symptoms of flat feet due to excessive pronation can also be observed in feet, shins, knees, thighs, lower and upper back.
