Heel Pain, Injury & Stress Relief in Bathurst and Lithgow
Plantar Fasciitis or Heel Spurs
Heel pain is one of the most common foot problems in podiatry. It may occur to people of any age and can be due to anything from sporting activities, improper footwear, overweight and overuse to diabetes, disorders or arthritis.
The most common type of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, also called heel spurs. Plantar fasciitis refers to the inflammation of a ligament-type structure that runs from your heel, along the arch and to your toes.
A few reasons that cause plantar fasciitis include:
- Overuse injury
- Repetitive strain
- Sudden injury
- Overloading
- Hyperpronation
- Arthritis
Plantar fasciitis may also result in conjunction with heel-stress, fracture and a few other medical disorders.
What to do:
Most heel pain is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. Initial treatment for this would be:
- Resting and limiting weight-bearing exercise
- Doing some gentle stretches like pulling the toes back towards you before standing
- Wearing a supportive strap
- Wearing a thin sock, rest your foot on an ice pack for 5 minutes at a time as frequently as possible.
After performing the initial treatment, if the pain has not eased within 7 days you will require detailed assessment and care. Consult a doctor or give Bathurst Podiatry a call for expert diagnosis and treatment.
